Elementary was created using a wonderful old set of oil, lead-based, pastel sticks passed on from a grandfather never met. They came in a lovely wood box with a brass clasp and the colors were so vibrant... lines of sticks each glowing with saturation. Maybe the box of pastels should be displayed instead, LOL! Dark Time is a portrait depicting my lowest point of desolation during the time I was imprisoned while on an uncharted island I shipwrecked on. After solo sailing many weeks, I was somewhere north and west of Australia. A huge storm came up out of nowehere. All communications were knocked out and the ship took on heavy water. The mast swung and struck my head. The next thing I remembered was waking up in the prison of an unknown tribe on a small uncharted island. I eventually escaped on a raft I fashioned from palms and coconuts. (charcoal sketch)

This lovely old grand piano served for decades in a vibrant community Baptist church before being sold and refurbished to make a new life somewhere else. During all it's years there, it probably saw more souls saved then the pastor. (charcoal sketch)

A sketch of the flower I plucked from a vase on a table while dancing the tango at a lovely restaurant in a quaint little villa on the Spanish coast. The air was warm, blowing off the ocean waves. The candles were flickering with excitement. This is a fond memory I recollect often. That was a good night. (pencil sketch)

Off The Rack is a drawing I did of the designing room at a clothing studio I designed at for some time in Paris. Before going to Paris, I had been living in a cozy cabin I built and lived at in Alaska's back country. Hungry for civilization and finished with my time of solitude and self discovery, I moved to Paris. While on the plane, I happened to be sitting next to a clothing manufacturer. The rest is history. Line Of Fruit is a wire skeleton of a melon and an exercise in depth and dimension. I began trying to draw various objects as wire frames as a way to pass time while researching a certain beetle in the Congo. the beetle's were most elusive, so there was a lot of down time. Thankfully, the research has led to much better protection of the species. (pencil sketch)

Three's A Crowd highlights three of my favorites. A perfect trio. The guitar was passed down from a grandfather who carried it through World War II, a 1945 Epiphone Blackstone. The violin was German-made in 1914 in Pittsburgh, PA, purchased from a special violin teacher who's daughter used the instrument until upgrading in college. She still loves her old violin though. The trumpet is a beautiful silver Bach Stradivarius. I played these extensively in a Dixie band in New Orleans for about a year as a way to earn enough money to move back out west. (charcoal sketch)

Old Stairs... it brings to mind going to your grandparents house as a child and looking at all the old pictures on the wall as you go up the stairs. This is in fact the home of the parents of one of my good friends in Italy where I stayed while honing my free diving skills for a major competition. I also worked as a pearl diver on the side for some spare cash to get around. (pencil sketch)

Some Crap is all about negative space. I was sitting in my apartment in Manhattan after a long day of trading stocks on the floor of the New York stock exchange when my pet micro pig knocked something over while walking by the open closet. I looked and found this perfect picture of stuff or crap positioned just right. I grabbed my paper and started drawing. (charcoal sketch)

Vintage depicts an old ragged music stand holding an equally used piece of sheet music and a violin bow. In the distance you see the violin on a chair. This old stand has beenin the family for as long as can be remembered. Me and my older brothers used this stand growing up and still do. Much of the use predates us as we got it from a school where it had received a lot punishment, as evidenced by all the markings, scratches, and graffiti. In terms of stands, this one is Vintage. It's seen a lot fo hardship, blood, sweat, and teers. We still love it, and hopefully our kids will too one day. (charcoal sketch)

Curious Safari is a quick sketch or more of a doodle I did while on safari in Africa. I was leading safaris for wealthy American tourists when in between shifts I sat for a drink near a fallen tree. I heard some noise and looked up. There was this wild cat curiously staring at me. It watched, turning its head from side to side for a few moments, then vanished. (pencil sketch)

A quick pencil sketch of a flower I used to stuff in my collar as a repellant for bugs while charting out possible locations in northern Siberia for oil companies looking for new oil deposits. I put them in the dog's collars as well to keep the bugs away from their eyes and noses (we used dog sleds to chart some areas). (pencil sketch)

Look is a sketch that took me several months. After earning a small fortune in the California real estate market, I moved to Victoria in British Columbia where I stayed in a high end resort relaxing until my money ran out. Every day, I would sit out on the padio at the restaurant of the resort watchin people pass by. I began to focus on peoples' eyes and started to draw them. There was such a range of emotion, thought, and feeling in them. It was fascinating. (charcoal sketch)

Cupped, another quick flower sketch, is of a flower I used as a cup while exploring in the Amazon. After stuffing the stem with charcoal from the nights fire, water filtered from the cup of the flower, down inside the stem through the charcoal, acting as a purifier. (pencil sketch)

Forest House is an original design. After treking through the most remote parts of Alaska, I came across an epic grizzlie bear. It tracked me for several days until finally, I lured it into a large whole I covered with branches and ferns. The grizzlie fell to the bottom of the 20 foot deep pit. I had to crawl down and finish it off by hand. I built the forest house after this to showcase the bear, which I taxidermied. Sitting in front of the house one day reflecting on the whole event, I sketched this picture. (pencil sketch)

Mascot is a sketch of a cougar, a high school mascot. This sketch was copied onto an overhead projector sheet and projected on one of the high school walls. The projected image was painted over and the school mascot displayed proudly. The final painting on the wall was several feet tall. (pencil sketch)

Tentacles is a quick flower sketch of a carnivorous plant I survived on while going on a walk-about with a native tribe deep in the outback. We would open the plants each morning and eat the bugs and small animals that became trapped the previous night. I learned to always leave a little food behind for the plant so it did not starve and continued to be a food source for us. (pencil sketch)

Country Estate is a quaint little sketch I did of a beautiful and cozy country home in France. I worked as a hired hand on the estates horse farm training purebred racing horses. I'll never forget the horse I trained that they called Happy As A Hog. It really was the happiest horse I've ever seen. (pencil sketch)

Show Time is another sketch of the same theatre seen earlier in the gallery. This one depicts the theatre mid-show. It brings back many fond memories of the thrill of live performance. I can almost still smell the livestock and hay we used for one act. (pencil sketch)

This is an actual sword made from scratch. 5 just like it were made along with two shorter swords. I followed with a nomadic tribe in Mongolia many years ago for about 2 and a half years. We fought several tribal battles with these blades and slayed numerous animals. I still have some serious scars from this period in my life. Those were true friends I lived along side those years.
